Guatemala Service Learning Trip

During my service learning trip to Guatemala, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a different cultural context while providing occupational therapy services to underserved communities. I collaborated with local healthcare providers and community members to assess and address the daily needs of individuals with disabilities, many of whom had limited access to formal rehabilitation services. Through this experience, I developed a deeper understanding of cultural humility, the importance of community-based interventions, and the value of adaptive strategies tailored to each person’s unique environment. I had the privilege of collaborating with physical therapy professionals in an interprofessional setting. Working alongside physical therapists, we combined our expertise to create holistic, client-centered interventions that addressed both the physical and functional needs of individuals with disabilities. While physical therapy focused on improving mobility, strength, and physical function, I contributed by providing occupational therapy strategies to enhance daily life skills, independence, and participation in meaningful activities. This collaborative approach allowed us to offer more comprehensive care, ensuring that our clients received well-rounded support. My time in Guatemala not only reinforced my commitment to providing client-centered care but also broadened my perspective on global healthcare disparities and the role of occupational therapy in promoting independence and participation in daily life. This trip was pivotal in strengthening my skills in resourcefulness, cultural competence, and advocacy for equitable healthcare.
